The Symbolism of Jesus Riding a Colt on Palm Sunday
In In the Gospels, we see that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt on what we now celebrate as Palm Sunday. This act was not a random choice but carried deep symbolism and significance. Firstly, the choice of riding a colt fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 which says, "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." This prophecy pointed to Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Secondly, by choosing to ride a humble colt instead of a majestic horse as kings and conquerors would usually do, Jesus demonstrated his humility and meekness.
